Ariton, AL - 81-Year-Old Troy Man Killed in Crash on US 231

Ariton, AL (August 18, 2025) – A collision claimed the life of a Troy man early Saturday morning in Dale County.

 

On August 16, a deadly crash occurred near the intersection of U.S. Highway 231 and Alabama Highway 51. According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency troopers, the incident took place around 7:45 a.m. and involved a pickup truck and a stopped 18-wheeler. The pickup, driven by 81-year-old Carroll Grant Hughes of Troy, collided with the semi-truck at a traffic light near Ariton.

 

Dale County Coroner John Cawley confirmed Hughes died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. Emergency personnel arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Hughes could not be revived. The driver of the 18-wheeler has not been publicly identified, and it is currently unknown if they sustained any injuries in the wreck.

 

Authorities reported that the crash caused a temporary disruption in traffic as crews worked to assess the scene and begin their investigation. Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are leading the investigation into what led to the collision. No further details have been shared as of now.
