Jemison, AL (June 30, 2025) – Authorities were called to the scene of an accident in Chilton County after a deadly head-on collision claimed the life of a 34-year-old Calera resident on the afternoon of June 28. Authorities report that Bradley J. Goggins was behind the wheel of his 1999 Chevrolet Silverado when, for reasons still under review, his vehicle collided directly with a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 38-year-old Zackary S. Moore of Thorsby.

The incident happened at approximately 2:05 p.m. along U.S. 31 near mile marker 237, just about two miles north of Jemison. Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division responded quickly to the scene. Sadly, Goggins, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was pronounced deceased at the site of the collision.

Moore, who was also unrestrained during the crash, sustained injuries and was transported by emergency medical teams to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital for further treatment. The severity of his injuries has not been disclosed at this time.

Authorities closed off sections of U.S. 31 for a period on Saturday afternoon while they conducted an initial investigation and cleared the scene of debris. Drivers in the surrounding area experienced delays as officers and first responders worked diligently to reopen the roadway safely. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division is continuing its investigation into the factors that may have contributed to this loss of life.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Bradley J. Goggins during this difficult time and wish Zackary S. Moore a full and swift recovery.

Car Accidents in Alabama

Car crashes remain one of the leading causes of death and injury throughout Alabama. According to recent reports, Alabama sees thousands of accidents each year, with a significant number resulting in fatalities or life-altering injuries. In 2022 alone, the state recorded more than 900 traffic-related deaths, highlighting the importance of safe driving habits. Staying vigilant behind the wheel, always wearing a seat belt, and obeying speed limits can significantly reduce risks on Alabama’s roads.

Understanding how these incidents happen can help drivers stay more aware and protect themselves. Below are a few common causes and factors that often play a role in serious crashes:

  • Distracted Driving: From texting to eating, distractions take eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. Even a momentary lapse can cause a severe collision, especially on highways where speeds are higher.

  • Failure to Wear a Seat Belt: Seat belts are a proven lifesaver. Not wearing one can turn what might have been a survivable crash into a deadly incident. Buckling up should be a non-negotiable habit every time you get behind the wheel.

  • Impaired Driving: Alcohol and drugs severely impact judgment, reaction times, and coordination. Driving under the influence continues to be a leading factor in fatal collisions statewide.

  • Speeding: Driving too fast reduces the time drivers have to react to sudden changes or obstacles. Speeding is a factor in about one-third of all fatal crashes across Alabama.

  • Weather Conditions: Heavy rain, fog, and other weather-related hazards can make roads treacherous. Slowing down and adjusting driving to match conditions is critical for everyone’s safety.
