Limestone Co., AL (July 14, 2025) – A serious head-on collision brought traffic to a standstill along Alabama 251 in Limestone County on the morning of July 14. The crash, which occurred just after 8:30 a.m. near Bethel Road, involved two vehicles and required a lengthy extrication effort to free trapped occupants.

According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials, the collision forced both directions of Alabama 251 to shut down for more than two hours as crews worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and assist the injured. Ardmore Fire & Rescue, along with multiple other local departments including Huntsville Fire & Rescue, Decatur Fire & Rescue, Athens Fire, Oak Grove-Thach Fire Department, Survival Flight, and Ardmore Police, all responded to the scene to help manage the emergency.

First responders faced challenging conditions due to the entrapment. Firefighters had to carefully extricate occupants from the wreckage, ensuring victims could be safely removed and transported for further medical treatment. At least one person was hurt in the accident and was flown by Survival Flight to an area hospital for additional care.

By mid-morning, crews were able to reopen the roadway to traffic after ensuring the area was safe and all debris was removed. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division continues to monitor the situation and will conduct a full investigation to determine the cause of the collision. Authorities have not yet released information on what led up to the vehicles colliding head-on.

Our thoughts go out to those injured and their families as they begin the road to recovery.

Car Accidents in Alabama

Every year, thousands of crashes occur across Alabama, with many taking place on rural highways like Alabama 251. Data shows that Alabama experiences higher-than-average rates of roadway fatalities compared to other states. Rural roads often lack adequate lighting, have higher speed limits, and present unique dangers such as limited passing zones. It is crucial for motorists to exercise caution, especially during morning and evening commutes. Understanding the most common causes of vehicle collisions can help drivers stay alert and better protect themselves:

  • Distracted Driving: Using a phone, adjusting the radio, or eating while driving takes focus off the road. Even a moment’s distraction can result in a life-changing crash.

  • Drowsy Driving: Fatigue can impair reaction time and decision-making abilities. Many crashes occur when drivers doze off behind the wheel or drift into oncoming lanes.

  • Speeding: Driving over the posted limit reduces the driver’s ability to respond quickly to sudden hazards. High-speed collisions often result in more severe injuries.

  • Poor Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, or ice can make roads slick and reduce visibility. Drivers must slow down and maintain a safe following distance to avoid losing control.

  • Impaired Driving: Operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs continues to be a leading factor in fatal accidents across the state.
