Limestone Co., AL – One Killed, Nine Hurt in Bus Crash on AL-53

Limestone Co., AL (January 31, 2024) – A major motor vehicle accident involving a Greyhound bus took place on Monday evening, claiming one person’s life while leaving multiple others injured. The incident occurred just before 10:00 p.m. on January 29.


According to reports provided by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, 63-year-old Toni Lopez was driving a Greyhound bus on Alabama Highway 53 when he became involved in a collision with a 2023 Kia solstice near Pinedale Road. The force of the collision caused the bus to overturn. The incident prompted the immediate closure of the highway as emergency crews assisted.


The driver of the Kia, identified as 23-year-old Sidney Benson, suffered fatal injuries and was immediately pronounced deceased. Lopez and one passenger on the bus were severely injured. The victims were transported by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital for emergency care. Two additional patients were transported to area hospitals by ambulance with serious injuries. Four other victims were transported to Madison Hospital for the treatment of undisclosed injuries. One additional person was injured. However, their status is not known at this time. Investigations surrounding the accident are underway.
