Loxley, AL (June 4, 2025) – A serious motor vehicle accident was reported early Tuesday, June 3, when a Medstar ambulance traveling north on Highway 59 was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection with Flowerwood Road in Loxley. The collision occurred around 9 a.m., resulting in at least one person being injured.
Witnesses at the scene described a violent impact when the pickup truck t-boned the ambulance, crashing directly into the driver’s side door. According to eyewitness Marshall Thomas, who is a volunteer firefighter from Mississippi, the ambulance had its lights and sirens activated as it tried to clear the intersection despite a red traffic light. Thomas recalled hearing the sirens moments before the crash and then witnessing the ambulance being pushed through a fence, over a ditch, and into a hotel parking lot where it collided with a parked vehicle.
Thomas immediately rushed to assist the victims, drawing on his firefighting background. Emergency personnel, including police and paramedics, responded quickly to the accident scene. Injured individuals were given aid at the scene before being transported to local hospitals for further medical evaluation.
Authorities have not yet released the total number of people injured in the crash. The cause of the collision remains under investigation by local law enforcement.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Ambulance Accidents in Alabama

Ambulance accidents, although less common than other types of collisions, pose unique dangers in Alabama. According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, over 150 accidents involving emergency vehicles occur annually across the state. Factors such as high speeds and emergency responses increase the risk of injury during these incidents.
Victims involved in such accidents often face challenging recoveries and complex legal processes. Learning about the common causes behind emergency vehicle accidents can help prevent future incidents. Here are some important points to keep in mind:
Intersection Collisions: Many ambulance accidents happen at intersections, where quick decisions are required. Emergency vehicles often proceed through red lights, increasing the risk of crashes when other drivers are not fully aware or fail to yield.
Driver Distraction: Distractions inside or outside of the ambulance can lead to misjudgments, especially when navigating busy roadways under stressful conditions.
Mechanical Failures: Given the extensive use of ambulances, mechanical failures such as brake issues or engine trouble can contribute to accidents if not properly maintained.
Driver Fatigue: Ambulance drivers work long, irregular hours, which can lead to fatigue and decreased reaction times behind the wheel.
Weather Conditions: Poor visibility and slick roads during Alabama's rainy seasons are significant contributors to emergency vehicle accidents, making cautious driving even more critical.
