Opp, AL (July 28, 2025) – A fatal motorcycle crash in Covington County claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman Saturday morning, July 26.

The collision happened around 10:15 a.m. on Covington County Road 82 near Murray Road, just outside the city of Opp. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Carol Kingsbury, a local resident, was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle when it collided with another bike in front of it.

Authorities say the motorcycle Kingsbury was on struck the rear of another motorcycle operated by a 67-year-old man, who was also from Opp. The impact caused Kingsbury to be thrown from the vehicle. Despite the quick arrival of first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The man operating the lead motorcycle was not reported to have sustained any injuries.

The ALEA Highway Patrol Division continues to investigate the cause of the crash and is expected to release further updates as more information becomes available. Investigators have not yet determined the reason for the crash, but no foul play has been reported.

Traffic in the area was temporarily affected while officials responded and worked the crash site. Witnesses in the area described seeing emergency vehicles blocking off portions of the roadway for several hours following the incident.

We hope those affected by this incident find peace and support as the investigation unfolds. Our deepest condolences go out to them.

Understanding the risks involved in motorcycle accidents is important, especially for riders and their families. Below are some key factors that often impact these types of incidents:

  • Rear-End Collisions: Rear-end crashes can be especially dangerous for motorcyclists, even at low speeds. Unlike in a car, there’s no protection from the impact, which can cause the rider to be ejected or suffer serious injuries on contact with the pavement or another vehicle.

  • Passenger Vulnerability: Motorcycle passengers face an added risk since they rely entirely on the operator for balance and navigation. In a collision, they are more likely to be thrown off due to limited grip or control.

  • Older Riders and Passengers: Age can influence injury severity in crashes. Older individuals tend to suffer more serious injuries and have a harder time recovering, making safety equipment and cautious riding even more critical.

  • Single-Vehicle Involvement: Even when more than one motorcycle is involved, these types of crashes are often considered single-vehicle from a technical standpoint. This sometimes complicates insurance claims and liability assessments.

  • Local Road Conditions: Roads like County Road 82 can pose hazards due to narrow lanes, sharp curves, or varying surface conditions. Rural roads are particularly risky for motorcyclists due to less traffic visibility and limited shoulder space.
