Bessemer, AL (June 16, 2025) – A tragic late-night incident claimed the life of a McCalla woman on Friday, June 13, after a chain of events along Interstate 59/20. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 41-year-old Amanda Lee Brulez.

According to authorities, the accident happened around 10:40 p.m. near mile marker 106. Brulez had just been involved in a two-vehicle crash and exited her vehicle when she was struck by an oncoming car. Emergency medical crews and law enforcement officers rushed to the location to assist. Sadly, Brulez was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:21 p.m.

The stretch of roadway was partially shut down as Bessemer police launched their investigation and crews cleared the area. The driver who hit Brulez remained at the scene, but additional information about the cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed. Investigators continue to look into the incident to determine all the factors involved.

Our thoughts are with the family of Amanda Lee Brulez. We extend our deepest sympathies to them.

Pedestrian Accidents in Alabama

Each year in Alabama, more than 100 pedestrians lose their lives in motor vehicle accidents. These crashes often involve speeding, distracted driving, or dangerous nighttime conditions. Pedestrians are especially vulnerable in these situations, leading to significant emotional and physical consequences for families left behind. To better understand the dangers pedestrians face, consider the following key factors:

  • Driver Inattention: When motorists are distracted by devices or conversations, they may fail to notice pedestrians on or near the road. Even a brief lapse in focus can result in fatal injuries.

  • Poor Lighting Conditions: Roadways with inadequate lighting create serious risks for those walking along or exiting vehicles at night. Drivers may not see pedestrians until it is too late.

  • Excessive Speed: High-speed traffic increases the severity of crashes. Drivers moving at high speeds have less time to react and are more likely to cause fatal injuries if a pedestrian is struck.

  • Alcohol-Related Incidents: Accidents involving alcohol often have devastating outcomes. Whether it’s the driver or the pedestrian under the influence, impaired judgment and slowed reactions are extremely dangerous.

  • Lack of Safe Crossings: Pedestrians who cross outside marked crosswalks or in areas with limited visibility are at a higher risk of being hit. Urban infrastructure plays a critical role in safety.
