The driver of the Jeep Cherokee sustained injuries and was transported to Bibb Medical Center for treatment.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of Brandon L. Seagle. And we wish a full and swift recovery for the injured driver.

What to Do After a Car Crash in Alabama

If you are involved in a car accident in Alabama, your health and safety are the immediate priority. First, check yourself and others for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt or if there is significant property damage.

Alabama law requires you to stop at the scene and report any accident involving injury, death, or property damage exceeding $250. Move your vehicle to a safe location if possible, turn on your hazard lights, and wait for law enforcement to arrive. While waiting, exchange contact, insurance, and vehicle information with the other driver, and gather names and contact details from any witnesses.

When interacting with others at the scene, do not admit fault or apologize, as these statements can be used against you. Stick to the facts when speaking with the police and avoid speculating about the cause.

Because Alabama follows the strict "contributory negligence" doctrine, any degree of fault, even as little as 1%, can completely bar you from recovering compensation. This makes the official police report and your own scene documentation vital evidence in protecting your claim.

You should also notify your insurance provider promptly to report the accident with factual information. Given the unforgiving nature of Alabama’s negligence laws, consulting with a professional early can ensure you do not inadvertently waive your rights, help preserve evidence before it is lost, and manage complex communications with insurance adjusters.
