ALEA identified one victim as 83-year-old Jerre L. Dingler. Dingler drove one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Investigators said his vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle traveling along U.S. 431. The impact caused fatal injuries, and responders pronounced Dingler dead at the scene.

A third person involved in the crash suffered injuries. Paramedics transported that individual to UAB Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released details regarding the extent of those injuries or the person’s current condition.

At this time, ALEA has not released information about what caused the vehicles to collide.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Jerre L. Dingler and Skylar C. Glenn, and we also hope for a full recovery for the injured victim as the investigation continues.

Two Killed in Deadly Head-On Collision on U.S. 431

Head-on collisions remain among the deadliest crashes on Alabama roadways. Routes like U.S. 431 carry steady traffic through both rural and semi-developed areas. These highways often include higher speed limits and limited median separation. As a result, drivers have little room for error.

When a vehicle crosses the center line, the consequences can prove devastating. On two-lane highways, drivers often have only seconds to react. Even small steering mistakes can lead to violent, life-ending impacts. Early morning hours may further increase risk due to fatigue or limited visibility.

Victims of head-on crashes frequently suffer severe injuries. These injuries often include traumatic brain injuries, chest trauma, internal organ damage, and spinal injuries. Survivors may require emergency surgery and extended hospitalization. Many also face months or years of physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Families affected by fatal crashes endure overwhelming emotional pain. The sudden loss of a loved one leaves lasting trauma. At the same time, families may face unexpected financial burdens. Funeral costs, lost income, and medical expenses can create severe strain during grief.

Alabama law allows families to pursue wrongful death claims when negligence causes fatal crashes. These claims may help families seek accountability and financial relief. Compensation may address funeral expenses and other losses related to the death.

Insurance companies often approach these cases aggressively. They may attempt to shift blame or minimize responsibility. Families navigating grief may find these tactics difficult to handle alone. Legal representation helps protect families during this challenging process.
