Summerdale, AL (November 22, 2025) – A 67-year-old Summerdale man died on November 21 after a two-vehicle crash inside the Summerdale city limits. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported that the collision happened around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Sanborn Avenue and Baldwin County 73.
Troopers stated that Thomas B. Harber drove a 2018 Jeep Wrangler when a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee struck his vehicle. The Grand Cherokee was driven by 56-year-old Nemecio Cruz, also of Summerdale. The impact caused Harber’s vehicle to overturn. Troopers pronounced him dead at the scene.
Emergency crews transported Cruz to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center for treatment. Doctors treated his injuries and released him later in the evening. After his release, troopers arrested Cruz and charged him with vehicular manslaughter.
ALEA stated that the investigation remains active. Officials plan to review all available evidence to determine what caused the Grand Cherokee to strike the Wrangler. No additional details have been released.
Our heartfelt sympathies go to the loved ones of Mr. Harber during this trying time.
Fatal Crashes in Baldwin County

Fatal crashes occur often in Baldwin County due to heavy traffic, rural intersections, and steady population growth. Intersections like Sanborn Avenue and Baldwin County 73 present challenges for drivers. Many rural intersections lack turn lanes or lighting. Drivers may misjudge speed or distance in the moments before a collision. A single mistake can result in a deadly impact that changes multiple lives within seconds.
Families face devastating loss after a fatal crash. They must handle funeral arrangements, sudden expenses, and the emotional impact of unexpected grief. Many families also struggle with unanswered questions about how the crash happened. When charges follow a crash, families often feel overwhelmed by the legal process. They may not know where to turn for support or how to protect their rights.
Law enforcement conducts detailed investigations after fatal crashes. Troopers review crash reports, scene evidence, and witness statements. They analyze vehicle damage and road conditions to understand the sequence of events. When criminal charges arise, investigators must meet strict evidence standards. Families often wait for answers while the process continues.
Civil claims differ from criminal charges. A criminal case focuses on guilt and punishment. A civil claim focuses on compensation for the victim’s family. Alabama law allows surviving families to pursue wrongful death claims when negligence causes a fatal crash. A claim may help cover funeral expenses, lost financial support, and the emotional toll of the loss. These claims also hold negligent drivers accountable in ways the criminal system cannot.
Insurance companies may complicate the process. Adjusters may question circumstances or minimize damages. Families may receive low settlement offers during a vulnerable time. Legal guidance helps families avoid mistakes and ensures their rights remain protected. A lawyer can gather records, speak with experts, and pursue fair compensation.
Families should seek legal help as soon as possible after a fatal crash. Early legal support helps secure evidence and allows families to focus on healing.
